Siman 610 – Candles for Yom Kippur

  1. A married man that has a light on in his house must also have a light on in his bedroom. (Rama – ShaH4)
  1. When Yom Kippur falls out during a weekday the beracha on the Yom Tov lights is “…l’hadlik ner shel Yom Hakippurim.” When it falls out on Shabbos the beracha is “l’hadlik ner shel Shabbos v’shel Yom Hakippurim”. (Rama , MB )
  1. The kovod shown for Yom Kippur is by wearing clean clothes and by increasing lights. Therefore spread nice cloths (like on Shabbos) at home and in shul and increase thick wicked lights in the shuls. (ShA Rama MB , )
  1. Light an extra candle for every married man. (MB )
  1. Light an extra candle as a kappara for deceased parents. (Rama MB )
  1. The custom is to wear a clean white kittlel. (Rama )
  1. Do not enter a bathroom wearing a kittel. (MB )
  1. Women also wear clean and white garments to honour the day. However because of the awesome judgement, they should not wear their Shabbos and Yom Tov jewelry. (MB )
