Siman 555 – Tefillin and tsitsis on Tisha B’Av I Comfort

  1. It is customary not to lay teffilin and tallis for Shacharis of Tisha B’Av. Just kattan under your garments. Some say that if you took off the tallis kattan at night, you say a beracha on it in the morning. (ShA1 – MB2)
  1. At Mincha, put on the tallis and tefillin with the berachos. Those who wear tefillin of Rabaynu Tam wear them now as well. Do not read the Shema and the other parshios with the tefillin as now it is like learning Torah which is still forbidden. (ShA1 – MB4,5)
  1. A person should minimize his sleeping comfort on the night of Tisha B’Av. (e.g. sleep on the floor, stone under your head, one pillow instead of two). (ShA2 – Rama2)
  1. The above minhag is not meant for a pregnant woman who cannot tolerate it, nor for a person with a weak constitution. (Rama2 – MB6)
  1. A person should generally minimize his honour and pleasure on Tisha B’Av as much as possible. Smoking is wrong on any of the 4 fasts especially on Tisha B’Av. Someone who is addicted can be maykil to smoke in private after midday. (Rama2 – MB8)
