- Kiddush doesn’t count unless it is made in the same place as the seuda that follows. If you change your mind to eat in a different room that is out of view of the room of Kiddush, you must repeat Kiddush. (ShA 1- MB 4)
- What if you moved over to eat on the other side of a large room? Bedieved it's okay. L’chatchila, don’t move over there unless you had intention to eat on the other side during Kiddush. (ShA 1 – MB 2)
- What if you can see the place of Kiddush from the place you want to eat? That is acceptable, but not if the Kiddush and the seuda are in two different buildings. (ShA 1 – MB 2)
- If you have in mind during Kiddush to have the seuda elsewhere, does it work? Yes, but only under the same roof. L’chatchila, only rely on this when you can see the place of the seuda. (ShA 1 – MB 8 – BeH “v’chayn”)
- Are the house and the sukka considered one makom? (i.e. You either made Kiddush inside and the rain stopped in time for the meal or you made Kiddush in the sukka and then it started to rain.) If the sukka is inside under a pulley – roof, yes. If the sukka is outside, adjacent to the house, then if you didn’t have in mind to eat elsewhere and you cannot see the sukka from where you made Kiddush (or the opposite), make Kiddush again. It is best just to drink a r’viis of the wine where you made the Kiddush, so it can count as “bimkom seuda”. (MB 5)
- Be careful not to go outside between the Kiddush and the seuda except to use the bathroom, since some poskim say that you will need to redo the Kiddush. Bedieved, do not repeat Kiddush since the seuda was held where you said Kiddush, after-all. (MB 12)
- Do not delay even a little bit between Kiddush and the seuda. If your intention during Kiddush was to eat later and you indeed delayed the meal, you weren’t yotzay Kiddush. (Rama 3 – MB 12, 14)
- You can be motzi people who need Kiddush even if you already fulfilled Kiddush for yourself. It would be better for those people to say Kiddush if they know it themselves. (ShA 4 – MB 20)
- You can also be motzi them with Boray Pri Hagaoffen even though you don’t drink any – that's because it’s an obligatory part of Kiddush. This applies to Shabbos morning Kiddush as well. (ShA 4)
- A widow who lives alone and doesn’t know the Kiddush should not go to the neighbor to hear Kiddush since she will not be eating there. Rather, the neighbor should go to her and say Kiddush for her, even though the neighbor isn’t fulfilling Kiddush for himself. (MB 20)
- What must you eat in order to fulfill Kiddush bimkom seuda?
- Bread (at least a kzayis) is the best. The Gr”a would only say Kiddush at a proper seuda.
- Mezonos from the five grains. Eat at least a k’zayis.
- Wine. There are 3 opinions:
- Wine doesn’t count at all
- Drink additional r’viis after Kiddush.
- Drink a r’viis of the Kiddush cup.
You should be strict in normal situations not to rely on drinking wine. You can be lenient for the morning Kiddush like the third opinion if you don’t have so much wine — but not for Friday night. (ShA 5 – MB 21, 22, 25 – ShaH 28 – BeH “kusvoo”)
- Fruit after Kiddush is only acceptable for “bimkom seuda” in the morning, where there is no cake available, and you are feeling weak. (MB 26)
- Since the Friday night seuda should be by candlelight, and the Kiddush should be said bimkom seuda, say Kiddush by the nairos. If you are very disturbed by the air or insects near the nairos, you can have Kiddush and the seuda elsewhere. (ShA 7 – BeH “v’hochi”)
