Siman 268 – Maariv / Mistakes in Daavening

  1. Say Vychuloo during Maariv. Pause between “Elokim” and “ess”. (ShA-MB1)
  1. In the paragraph Atta Kidashta pause between “Lishmecha” and “tachlis”. (MB1)
  1. The minhag on Friday night is to say “v’yonoochu vuh”, on Shabbos day “v’yonoochu voi”, and at Mincha change it to “v’yonoochu vum”. (MB1)
  1. The weekday Shemoneh Esray is appropriate to say on Shabbos (and Yom Tov) as well (except for at Mussaf), but Chazal instituted a shorter one because of tircha. Therefore if you remembered only during any of the middle berachos (13) of request, you must finish the entire beracha before continuing the Shabbos nussach. (ShA2-MB3,5)
  1. Even if you begin one word of the weekday berachos, finish that whole beracha and then continue with the Shabbos nussach. Exceptions: “Atta” of Atta Chonen can also be the first word of a Shabbos beracha (Atta Kidashta) so just ignore that you said “Atta” and begin right away with the Shabbos nussach. (ShA3 – BeH”im”)
  1. Let’s imagine that after Shemoneh Esray you can’t remember if you said a weekday one or a Shabbos one. We assume your tongue said a weekday one like it is used to. Daaven again. The only time a weekday Shemoneh Esray counts is if you also mentioned Shabbos (same with Yom Tov) in the prayer – even if not as a complete beracha. (Sha4-MB9,10)
  1. Such a mistake during Mussaf will only be okay if you at least mentioned “Yehi ratzon shenaaseh lifonecha…”. (Rama 4-MB11)
  1. If you ever accidentally skip the pesukim of korbonos in Mussaf, it's okay. (MB11)
  1. The main part of the beracha for Shabbos Shemoneh Esray is “… r’tzay vimnuchosaynu…”. If you switched the rest of the nussach for the wrong tefilla, it's okay bedieved. If you remember your mistake before ending the beracha, do not continue your error. (ShA6-MB14)
  1. The only exception to the above is if you daavened Mussaf instead of one of the others, or you daavened one of the others in place of Mussaf. (ShA6)
  1. On Yom Tov night there is no Vychuloo in Shemoneh Esray, therefore when it falls out on Friday night we say it out loud afterwards. Because of this, we always repeat Vychuloo every Friday night. (ShA7-MB18)
  1. Vychuloo should be repeated by everyone together while standing – as the tzibbur is testifying for Hashem about the Creation. Because of this, you should hurry and finish your silent Shemoneh Esray so you can say the testimony with 10 men. If you daavened by yourself, you should also repeat it having no intention for testimony and therefore you may be seated. (MB19-BeH”um’oomad”)
  1. The minhag is to repeat Vychuloo while standing just before Kiddush. (MB19)
  1. After Vychuloo, the chazzan says the 7-fold beracha. He should pause after “…konay shomayim vo’oretz” to let the tzibbor say Mogen Avos out loud until “…zaycher l’maaseh v’raishis”. At that point, the chazzan should repeat Mogen Avos out loud from the beginning. (ShA8-MB21, 22)
  1. Only in shul is the 7-fold beracha recited, but not in a private house-minyan. A temporary (several days) shul with a sefer Torah is considered a shul. (MB24)
  1. It is forbidden to talk from Vychuloo until after Kaddish. (ShA 12-MB 26)
