הChelek 5
- All Melachos, d’oraisa and d’rabbonon, that are ossur on Shabbos are ossur on Yom Tov except for Ochel Nefesh. (ShA – MB )
- Four examples of Ochel Nefesh are: kneading, baking, slaughtering and cooking. All of these, if prepared before Yom Tov, will lose some fresh taste. But something that tastes the same or better if prepared the day before should be done the day before. Chazal want you to enjoy the Yom Tov by taking care of everything you can beforehand, given that you won’t lose out on the fresh taste. (MB )
- According to the above, you are not allowed to knead noodle dough nor cook dried fruit on Yom Tov. These are examples of foods which are better tasting when prepared yesterday. (MB )
- If you delayed and did not knead the noodles from before, you can still knead them on Yom Tov – but with a shinui. If you could not knead the noodles because of a situation beyond our control. (e.g you ran out of time) , you can knead them on Yom Tov even without a shinui. (Rama – MB )
- There are melachos that are forbidden even if needed for Ochel Nefesh. Like – harvesting, grinding, squeezing fruit juice, trapping, threshing, and sifting. The reason is because since they are usually done in bulk quantities they fall under the scriptial category of “melleches avoda”. These activities will prevent simchas Yom Tov. (ShA – MB , , )
- There is a dispute among the poskim if there is a mitzva of shvisas behemto on Yom Tov. If yes, then you must not allow your animal to carry anything out into the reshus horabim even l’tzorech (Ochel Nefesh does not apply to animals).Even if not, you still can’t load your animal the same way that you do on Chol – even if the animal stays in one domain. (ShA – MB – ShaH 21)
- We pasken like Rabi Shimon on Shabbos that “ain muktza”. This allows us to move items set aside for merchandise, items put into long-term storage, foul and disgusting objects and even muktza of nolad. The Rama brings poskim that are lenient the same way on Yom Tov with the exception of nolad. On Yom Tov do not be lenient with muktza of nolad. An example of this is a bone that had meat on it fit for humans to eat and then the bones separated completely from the meat on Yom Tov. The bones are now only fit for dogs and are nolad (ShA – MB )
- There is a more severe category of muktza of nolad. That is an object that did not even exist before Shabbos and Yom Tov. This is muktza even according to Rabi Shimon. An example of this is ashes that came about from a fire on Yom Tov. It’s called “muktza gamur”. (ShaH 26)
