Siman 43 – Tefillin in the bathroom

  1. You may not enter the bathroom wearing tefillin. (ShA1)
  1. It is forbidden to urinate (even not in a bathroom) while wearing tefillin. (ShA1)
  1. If when walking in the street wearing tefillin (e.g. on the way to shul in the morning) you pass through garbage areas – you must cover your tefillin, and possibly the straps. If you know it will not be possible to cover them, wait to lay your tefillin until you get to shul. (MB20)
  1. If your tefillin are with you and you need to enter a public bathroom (where there is no safe place to leave your tefillin. e.g. airport) put them in one vessel, hold them in your hand and enter. (ShA6 – MB23)
  1. Regarding a bathroom at home, the only permissible way to bring the tefillin in would be to make sure that they are in two coverings. (ShA7 – MB24)
  1. The above applies likewise to the other holy books and writings with Hashem’s name. (MB25)
