וChelek 6

  1. Put on your tallis while it is still day so you will be able to say a beracha on it. (MB )
  1. The gadol of each city should be the chazzan to chant “B’yeshiva shel maalah…”. Two other men should stand with him, one to his right and one to his left. He should also chant Kol Nidray and say the Shehecheyanu, having in mind to be motzi anyone who wants to be yotzay with him. (ShA , MB , )
  1. Kol Nidrei should begin while it is still day. It is chanted 3 times, each time louder than the one before. (Rama )
  1. Kol Nidray serves not only to nullify vows of the past but also to make a condition for future vows. The condition is that no future vows should take effect if you do not remember the condition when uttering the vow. This condition cannot be made through a shaliach, therefore the kahal should whisper along the Kol Nidray with the chazzan. (MB )
  1. The wording “dindarna” can be used with “m’Yom Hakippurim she’ovar ad Yom Hakippurim zeh” (which is past tense) and with “m’Yom Hakippurim zeh ad Yom Hakippurim haboh olaynu” (which is future tense). (MB )
  1. The tzibbur should ideally say the Shehecheyanu along with the chazzan and quickly finish before him so as to enable them to respond omayn to his beracha. (MB )
  1. The chazzan chants three times “V’nislach l’chol addas….” and the kahal says three times “Vayomer Hashem solachti kidvorecha”. (Rama )
  1. These tunes should continue until nightfall. If there is still time until z’man Krias Shema, fill the time by reciting Tehillim. (MB )
  1. Do not deviate from the minhagim of the city even with regard to the tunes (people are liable to get mixed up) or the piyutim. (Rama MB )
  1. On the night of Yom Hakippurim and its morrow, we say “Boruch shaym…” out loud like the angels do. (ShA MB )
  1. When Yom Kippur falls out on Shabbos the following is added to the daavening:
    1. No Kabbolas Shabbos except for Mizmor Shir L’Yom Hashabbos. (BaH6) 2.V’hanchilainu Hashem Elokainu b’ahava uvratzon Shabbos kodshecho v’yonuchu vo…(MB )
    2. Vatitayn lonu es yom haShabbos hazeh v’es Yom Tzom Hakippurim. (MB )
    3. Vychoolu. (ShA )
    4. Beracha Achas May’ain Sheva. (Say “Hamelech Hakadosh she’ain komohu.” Conclude with the normal “…mekadaysh haShabbos” not mentioning Yom Kippur.) (ShA MB )
  1. Some men copy angels by standing all day and standing at night during the selichos and tefillos. Leaning is okay if you feel weak. You must be certain that standing won’t detract from your kavana, otherwise it is an avaira. (ShA MB – ShaH18)
  1. It is better to go to sleep at home rather than staying awake all night in shul – you will have better kavana the next day. This is correct especially for chazzanim who need to have a good voice for the day’s tefillos. (Rama MB )
  1. Say the first four mizmoray Tehillim in addition to Krias Shema She’al Hamitta before going to sleep. (MB )
  1. It is best not to wrap yourself up with blankets that will heat your body. At least do not cover your feet. (MB )
  1. If one does sleep in shul, sleep far from the Aron because he may come to pass gas. (Rama MB )
  1. It is good to learn Mishnayos Yuma and the statements about Teshuva found at the end of the mesechta. (MB )
  1. A talmid chocham should not excuse himself from saying the tefillos and selichos with the tzibbur by learning Torah. (MB )
