Siman 614 – Anointing and Wearing Shoes

  1. It is forbidden to anoint even a small part of your body even if your intention is only to remove a bad smell. (ShA )
  1. For medical purposes anointing is allowed provided that during the weekday a healthy person would smear as well. This will remove the appearance of refua. (ShA MB )
  1. It is forbidden to wear leather shoes and sandals on Yom Kippur. An amputee may not put on a fake foot of leather. These are ossur even if only covered with leather. (ShA )
  1. Shulchan Aruch and most achronim allow wearing non-leather shoes; therefore do not rebuke anyone who does so. However, it is proper to be machmir to wear socks. If you need to walk outdoors wear thin soled non leather footgear so you will feel the ground under your feet. (ShA MB -ShaH5)
  1. The following people can wear shoes because the chill is harmful to them. 1. A woman within 30 days after childbirth.
    1. An ill person even if there is no danger.
    2. Someone who has a wound on his foot.
    3. Someone who could become ill walking barefoot in the rain.
    4. Walking through mud puddles. (ShA , MB , )
  1. You may put on shoes so your feet do not become dirty when going into a bathroom. (MB )
  1. As soon as you exit the above mentioned dirty areas, remove your shoes immediately. (MB )
  1. Try not to touch your shoes directly so you won’t need to wash the part of your hand that touched them. (MB )
  1. Exposed dirty shoes is a disgrace for the shul – Yom Kippur is honoured specifically through cleanliness. (MB )
