Siman 583 – Food for a Siman Tov

  1. A person should eat the following foods for a siman tov on both nights of Rosh Hashana and pray the respective tefilla with a whole heart and feelings of teshuva: a. Rubia – “Yehi ratzon milfonecha Hashem Elokaynu Vaylokay avosanu sheyirbu zechuyosaynu”
    1. Karti – “Yehi ratzon…sheyikorsu son’aynu”
    2. Silka – “…….sheyistalku oyvaynu”
    3. Tamray – “….sheyitammu son’aynu”
    4. Kara – “…sheyikra g’zar dinaynu v’yikor’u lifonecha z’chuyosaynu”
    5. Sweet apple in honey – “Tischadaysh olaynu shana mesuka”
    6. Pomegranate – “Narbeh zechuyos k’rimon” (ShA Rama MB , -ShaT*)
  1. Even though you eat the fruit after Hamotzee, you must say a beracha on it. Begin to eat the fruit then say the tefilla. (MB , )
  1. h. Head of ram or sheep or another head – “Nihyeh l’rosh v’lo l’zanav.” (ShA MB , )
  1. There is a custom to dip the Hamotzee bread into honey. (MB )
  1. Eat tender meat and all types of sweets. Do not eat sour foods and things cooked in vinegar. Eating fish is a siman tov to be fruitful and multiply. (Rama MB )
  1. It goes without saying to create a siman tov with your cheerful mood, confident in your teshuva and good deeds. Beware of anger. (MB )
  1. Do not eat egoze. It has the gematria of chayt and causes excess phlegm which may disturb the daavening. (Rama )
  1. Go to the river on the first day of Rosh Hashana after Mincha and before sh’kia to say the following pesukim:
    1. “v’sashlich bimtzulos yam kol chatosaynu…”
    2. “toshuv terachamaynu…….”
    3. “Mi Kayl kamocha………….” (Rama MB )
  1. It is best to go to a place that has real live fish. (MB )
  1. When the first day of Rosh Hashana falls on Shabbos, go to the river on the second day to avoid desecration by carrying seforim etc. (MB )
  1. Avoid sleeping and idleness during the day of Rosh Hashana. After the seuda go to learn Torah and if your head feels heavy sleep a little bit if you can’t manage. (Rama MB )
  1. Some have a minhag to complete the entire Tehillim. (MB )
