- Think that everything that is happening to the bird is really fitting to happen to you, and Hashem will remove evil decrees from you by means of your teshuva thoughts. (MB )
- All Aserress Yemay Teshuva is the time for kapporos but the best is after Selichos on Erev Yom Kippur while it is still dark. If there is too much pressure to do it then, you can use money to swing around your head instead. (MB )
- Take a rooster for a male and a hen for a female. For a pregnant woman take both a rooster and a hen. It’s best to take white birds. (Rama – MB )
- While swinging it around your head say “Ze chalifosi, temurosi, kapporosi”. (MB )
- It is best to evaluate the shechted chickens and to redeem them by giving their value to the poor unless you know that the receiver will not be embarrassed to take the chickens themselves. The money should not be from maaser gelt. (MB , )
- Throw the innards of the chickens to a place that birds can come feed from them.(Rama)
