Siman 608 – Seuda Hamafsekkes

  1. You must cease eating before bayn hashmoshos in order to add from the ordinary day to the holiness of Yom Kippur. We hold that bayn hashmoshos begins when the sun disappears from sight, so add on by stopping to eat before then. (ShA MB )
  1. If you witness a Jew (that is bichlal amisecha) transgressing even a din d’rabbonon you must rebuke him if you think he might listen. (MB – BeH “aval”)
  1. If you know he will not accept your rebuke and he is unaware of the (severity of the) prohibition it is better not to rebuke him. (ShA MB , )
  1. If the transgressor is aware of the prohibition you must rebuke him even if you know he will not stop his sin. It is a mitzvah to keep up the rebuke until the sinner shows disgust towards you. But if many people are sinning – just show your rebuke once and be quiet. (Rama MB – ShaH13)
  1. If the transgressor is someone you aren’t comfortable with don’t rebuke him since he will hate you for it. (BeH “chayav”)
  1. You should live near someone from whom you will accept rebuke. (BeH “chayav”)
  1. Before benching on the seuda hamafsekkes it is proper to verbalise (at least think) that you will not be accepting upon yourself the fast yet. (MB )
  1. Once you accept the fast, the issurim of washing, smearing, and doing melacha also begin. (MB )
  1. Accepting upon yourself the fast helps only from Plag Hamincha and onwards. (MB )
  1. On Erev Yom Kippur eat only foods that are easily digested so you won’t feel full coming into the holy day. (ShA )
  1. For the seuda hamafsekkes do not eat foods that heat the body or increase zera. e.g. spices, good wine, hot milchicks, eggs. (Rama MB , )
  1. Poultry should be served for the morning meal and for the seuda hamafsekkes. (MB )
  1. Do not eat sesame – it causes phlegm. (MB )
  1. Do not become intoxicated during these meals. (MB )
