- Delight the Shabbos with fancy food and drink – each place according to what they consider chashuv. Prepare no less than two cooked dishes. Eat fish at each of the 3 meals of Shabbos. (MB1,2)
- You do not have to eat food that causes you tzaar. Therefore if you dislike fish, delight the Shabbos with other foods. (MB2)
What if you can’t afford it?
- If you are not yet poor enough for tzedoka and you can only afford to spend two meals like you eat on a weekday, do so – you are not obligated to spend on a third meal. Nevertheless, really try to get bread for 3 meals and a little bit of cheap fish. If you have a way to secure a loan even on interest to buy the food, you must not neglect oneg Shabbos. (MB1,3,4)
- If you are eligible for tzedoka, the gabbai should give you more for Shabbos: 3 meals (instead of 2) and a little bit of cheap fish. An important man should receive more. Beside this, you should save up during the week in order to add to the honor of Shabbos from your own expenses. (ShA – MB1)
- A person’s mezonos is decreed for the year on Rosh Hashanah. Beware not to spend luxuriously on them because you may spend it all too soon. However, expenses for Shabbos and Yom Tov and the money you send to your son’s rebbe on Rosh Chodesh is not included in the decree. The more you spend for those, the more you will be reimbursed. - If someone sends you food for Shabbos, do not eat it during the week. (MB4)
- Launder on Thursday so you will have white clothes for Shabbos and you will have time on Friday to prepare other Shabbos needs. (MB5)
- Do not re-wear clothes from Shabbos to another, they must be laundered every Thursday. (MB5)
- Women should not buy challos from the bakery, rather they should knead a shiur to remove challah from their own on Friday in preparation for Shabbos. Do not change this minhag. (Rama1 – BeH “v’hoo”)
- It is proper to be careful to eat only pas Yisroel on Shabbos and Yom Tov. But, of course, if all you have is pas palter (like Jews in the army) you can even say Kiddush on it. (MB6)
- There is a minhag to eat a meat pie – sandwiched between two layers of dough – on Shabbos so as to remember the mon. (Rama1)
