Siman 264 – The Lamp wicks and oil

  1. The wicks and oil in any lamp on Friday night must produce a good quality flame so you won’t be tempted to adjust the flame on Shabbos. Suggested wicks are those made of combed flax, linen or cotton. The best oil is olive oil. Other good quality oils are also acceptable and are preferred over wax candles. A modern candle that has a clearer flame and is never tilted or adjusted is better than wax and maybe better than any oil. (ShA1,3,6 – MB23)
  1. As you light the nairos, be sure not to move your hand away from the ner until most of the exposed wick is caught as was done with the menorah lighting in the Mikdash. (ShA8 – MB26)
  1. The husband should prepare the wicks for easy kindling by pre-lighting each one and then extinguishing them. (Rama9 – MB28)
